Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy clears away visible veins on the surface of your skin. These veins won’t harm you, but you might not like how they look. They can appear anywhere on the body but are especially common on the legs.

Sclerotherapy uses a chemical called a sclerosing agent, which is salt-based, to line the inside of your blood vessel. This solution irritates the blood vessel, which constricts and closes. Any blood within the vessel clots, which blocks the blood vessel, eventually turning it into scar tissue and closing the vein.

Once the vein can no longer allow blood through it, it disappears from the surface of your skin. Depending on the size of the vein you target, results can take as little as three weeks or as long as four months.

Can I benefit from sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treats two different types of visible veins. During your consultation at CANJ Aesthetics, you can talk to the team about using sclerotherapy to target:

Spider veins

Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that look like small fragments of a spider web on your skin’s surface. They can be red, blue, or purple. While they can show up anywhere on the body, they’re most common on the face and legs. Spider veins often appear when blood vessels burst under pressure or due to sun damage.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are similar to spider veins but larger. They usually bulge above the level of your skin’s surface and appear twisted or lumpy. Varicose veins develop because valves inside the veins, which help carry blood upward, become faulty. As a result, blood falls backward and pools inside the vein, which enlarges it.

What should I expect during sclerotherapy?

You can expect your sclerotherapy procedure to take roughly 15-30 minutes at CANJ Aesthetics. Your provider sanitizes your skin before carefully injecting the sclerosing agent directly into the vein you want to target.

You might feel some slight cramping right after the injection, but most people find the experience to be tolerable. You may see some bruising around the vein shortly after treatment, but this is normal. For any irritation or bruising, the team gives you instructions on caring for your skin in the hours and days after sclerotherapy.
